There are very few single persons who had such a lasting effect on the traditions of jazz, especially the music of Chicago, as the guitarist and banjo player Eddie Condon.
Albert Edwin "Eddie" Condon was born on the 16th November, 1904 in Goodland, Indiana. Like so many other white musicians he was an admirer of the black and white bands from New Orleans, who came to Chicago in the Twenties. He taught himself to play the banjo, and performed as a 15 year old at high school parties and dances. It was at such a party that he made the acquaintance of Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland. They all went together with Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Frank Teschemache and Joe Sullivan to the Austin High School. The boys had made a habit of creeping into the local clubs in which the black bands played jazz music. They listened to Joe King Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
Condon and his friends were impressed by the rhythm, and the atmosphere which their idols were capable of creating. Several of them formed a band, which
the young Condon joined a short time later. He played guitar and banjo, but his major contribution was as an organiser and manager of the band. In 1927 -after Red McKenzie had joined the band - the small group of white musicians were to make recordings which were still being talked about decades later. They called themselves the "McKenzie & Condon Chicagoans", and developed their own style, which was greatly different from that of the black bands. Their music was described as being hectic, almost hysterical.
The human aspect, and the feeling of unification between the musicians, was very strong and was reflected in their music. The usual passion of the jazz musicians from Louisiana was however missing. The "Chicagoans" played the very first, original white jazz which was later to get the name "Chicago Style".
Condon went to New York in 1928 and became the partner of Red Nichols. Together with McKenzie and Jack Bland they put together the "Mound City Blue Blowers". Business started to flounder after the Wall Street crash, whereby the white musicians had it easier than their black colleagues. Condon formed the
"Windy City Seven" with Pee Wee Russell. Parallel to this he recorded with Bobby Hackett and Artie Shaw, and went under his own name into recording studios with the All Stars line-up.
At this point in time many musicians had a tendency towards excessive alcohol consumption, and many were ruined by it. Condon, who was known as one of the hardest of drinkers, also showed signs at the age of 32 of his alcohol abuse. He had his pancreas removed through an emergency operation, which did not however stop him from further consuming his favourite drink, whiskey.
Condon organised jam sessions and jazz concerts from 1939. He was saved from being called up thanks to a psychologist, who declared him to be an alcoholic. After the end of the Second World War he opened up a night club in 1946 in New York, in which he also performed with his band. When one went into his club one could see a small group of, in the meantime slightly grey-haired, men on a small stage keeping the Chicago style of the Twenties alive. The club, which was in the artist's part of the town, became a meeting place for intellectuals.
He wrote his autobiography in 1947 "We Called It Music" and expressed with this title what he understood under jazz. He started his own jazz series in television as of 1948, and was highly acclaimed by the audiences of the Newport Festivals in 1954 and 1956.
Condon eventually went on a tour of Great Britain in 1957. A new tour followed in 1964. He performed in Australia, New Zealand and Japan, although he had only just recently recovered from a major illness. He then worked as a guitarist now and then with, amongst others, Billy Butterfield, Kai Winding, Art Hodges, Wild Bill Davidson and Barney Bigard.
Eddie Condon died on the 4th August, 1973 in New York. His New York club was closed in 1985.
Eddie Condon limited his style of playing the guitar to rhythm work. His most important role in the history of jazz was as an organiser of jazz concerts. He was the one who initiated the Dixieland revival in the U.S.A. and who thereby secured himself an immortal status.
