Our release begins with a concert recorded by the sextet in Hamburg on April 12, 1957. The repertoire includes five classic standards, featuring all three horn players on each tune. Shank and Cooper play alto and tenor saxophone, respectively, on the tunes What a Difference a Day Makes, and Our Love Is Here to Stay, and flute and oboe, respectively, on the tracks These Foolish Things, Embraceable You and Lullaby of Birdland, the horn solos are excellent, and Mangelsdorff proves a more than capable frontline partner for his American collaborators, displaying his virtuosic technique, energetic style and gift for melodic invention on each solo. The same could be said for Zoller, who will certainly surprise jazz fans unfamiliar with his work. The Hungarian guitarist mowed to New York in 1966, where he performed and recorded with such notable musicians as Herbie Mann, Steve Lacy, Cal Tjader, Benny Goodman, Shirley Scott, Lee Konitz, Jim Hall, and Sir Roland Hanna, among others. He also made numerous recordings as a leader up until his death in Vermont on January 25, 1998. Much like Mangelsdorff, Zoller was a truly versatile musician, who became one of the most accomplished guitarists in the history of free jazz.
The second part of this edition consists of a radio broadcast of the sextet from the well-known German drummer and bandleader Freddie Brocksieper's legendary Munich club "Studio 15". The broadcast also featured the Munich radio figure Werner Gotze as the MC for the program. Although the broadcast date is listed in discographies as May 29, 1957, the following transcripts between Werner Gotze and Bob Cooper seem to contradict this information, and it is much more likely that it took place in late March.
Tracks 8, 10 and 13 of this CD feature brief interview snippets between Werner Gotze and Mangelsdorff, Cooper and Shank, respectively.

Review by Scott Yanow
--------------------------------------------------------

Altoist Bud Shank and tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper toured Europe extensively in 1957 and spent two months in Germany. While there, they often worked with trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff's unit, a group that also featured guitarist Attila Zoller. Mangelsdorff appeared on a few broadcasts with Shank and Cooper, with the two previously unissued broadcasts on this valuable CD being under the trombonist's name. Mangelsdorff is best remembered for his work in free jazz and the avant-garde but in 1957 he was a very fluent bop trombonist, one who held his own with the two saxophonists. Zoller also fares particularly well during these straight-ahead performances while Shank (doubling occasionally on flute) and Cooper (who switches to oboe for a couple of specialties) are heard in their early prime. Fans of West Coast jazz will definitely love these rare and well-preserved broadcasts.
