- "Несколько слов на английском":
Contemporary soul-pop artists, including Patti Austin, Tevin Campbell, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jone, Take 6, Howard Hewett, and Dianne Reeves, take a pop-song approach to Handel's classic Christmas oratorio. Handel's wonderful melodies are updated with synthesizers, drum machines, and slick pop production from Quincy Jones and Take 6's Mervyn Warren. (All Music Guide)
By Anne Marie Welsh
THEATER CRITIC
December 3, 2004
In one of those hands-across-the-ages collaborations dear to artists in all media, music producer Quincy Jones drew a starry lineup of soloists and choir members from the gospel and secular music worlds to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Handel's "Messiah" by – what else – recording a new album.
The resulting "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" won Jones his 27th Grammy Award in 1992 and has since been played, sung, danced and, even occasionally, staged.
The name of San Diego's A Common Ground Theatre says most of what you need to know about the hands-across-the-divide motivation of this grass-roots theater company.
Executive producer Floyd Gaffney, a UCSD theater professor emeritus, won't have Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kahn and the Boys Choir of Harlem in his stage production of "Soulful Celebration." But he says that music director Rose Buchanan has assembled "the best gospel singers in the city" for performances of the unusual oratorio, which opens at the World Beat Center tonight.
Datebook
"You could actually call it a premiere," said Gaffney of the holiday show for which he and actor Tony Drummond wrote a script using "Bible texts that bridge the music and tell the Nativity story, ending joyfully with the Hallelujah chorus."
Aside from the 14-member gospel choir conducted by Buchanan, the cast includes a rap artist, a hip-hop dancer, three actor-narrators and a seven-piece band.
The Jones recording, often nicknamed "Black Messiah," blended European and African-American musical forms – classical, gospel, blues, R&B, hip-hop and jazz – as it transposed the 18th-century text into a troubled, late 20th century. Classical music lovers greeted the unusual project mostly with silence. At least one music critic, Ottavio Roca, then at The Washington Times, found it sacrilegious, "a bizarre specialty act that will barely last out the season," while a few others praised its postmodern appropriation of Handel's music now shaped and transformed into a hip, new identity.
Mozart had done something similar, though still within the classical tradition, when his tribute to the genius of Handel updated the 1742 "Messiah" score, adding woodwind parts and new melodies to reflect the musical taste of his times. Gaffney and Buchanan say they've done just that with the music Jones and company recorded.
Evolution of 'The Messiah'
"The (written) score has never been available, so Dr. Buchanan worked to score it herself. We aren't doing the whole thing; we're constructing our own presentation based on Jones' album, keeping the chronology of Handel's numbers," said Gaffney.
Buchanan has also inserted several "well-received, contemporary Gospel pieces in their latest arrangements," Gaffney said, praising skills that he said drew singers to the project. "She's worked in church settings with choirs and choruses, and also in musical theater on shows like 'Purlie Victorious.' "
He and Buchanan collaborated last year at this time to stage A Common Ground's first production, the Langston Hughes musical "Tambourines to Glory" at the Kroc Center Theatre in the Rolando neighborhood. Gaffney, who ran the Southeast Community Theatre for many years, has directed scores of plays, including the potent AIDS drama "Before It Hits Home," and his musical credits include several stagings of "Black Nativity" and a rousing "Gospel at Colonus" two years ago at St. Paul's Cathedral.
A Common Ground Theatre aims, he said, to produce quality performing arts events as "a bridge to the diverse San Diego community. We're multiracial and we're trying to involve people in expressing and sharing their traditions. We want to create that common ground where we all can stand together."
When he retired from UCSD and from the Southeast Community Theatre, Gaffney recalled that he was "content" for himself, but "concerned about young people because there was no children's theater or social service agency with a theater to get kids educated and interested in the performing arts the way I was in Cleveland."
Working on "Soulful Celebration" has been "pure joy," he said, unabashedly. "The chorus sounds like The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. We have a prayer circle during each rehearsal; there's a deep spiritual component to what we're doing. This isn't just a theater show."
He credits community leaders Rufus De Witt and Dr. Robert Matthews with getting A Common Ground Theatre organized two years ago. "Now that we're established with a board of directors, we're not just held together by chewing gum anymore," Gaffney said. "Now we can think about reaching out and doing more than just one production a year."
