Успех принес организованный им в 1954 квинтет с двумя тромбонами (вторым был Джей Джей Джонсон). Самые популярные альбомы этого периода — Early Bones (1954), An Afternoon At Birdland (1955), Jay And Kai (1955). В 1956–60 записывался с Вуди Германом, Джерри Маллигеном, Нилом Хефти, Зутом Симсом, Майлзом Дэвисом, Стэном Гетцем и другими. В 60-е годы пытался соединить медные инструменты с электроникой, писал музыку к кинофильмам, иногда собирал группы из четырех тромбонов, в 1971–72 вошел в ансамбль Jazz Giants, гастролировавший в Европе. После 1973 не выступал из-за ухудшившегося здоровья.

Tremendous solo work as a leader from Kai Winding -- tracks recorded in that sans-JJ period of the mid 60s, when Winding was working for Verve with some really wonderful results! Some of the cuts here are straighter jazz from Kai's past, but others feature even groovier large arrangements -- music that starts in jazz, but picks up other mod 60s touches too -- often in ways that bring a nice dose of soul and swing to Winding's big band charts! There's still plenty of trombone in the lead, but also lots of tinkling piano, echoey percussion, colorful guitar, and floating flutes -- all folded together wonderfully with a sound that's ripe for rediscovery.
