Jeff Beck has made many strange albums, but none were ever quite as strange as this. With the Big Town Playboys offering support, Beck rips through 18 Gene Vincent numbers (not "Be-Bop-a-Lula," however), paying tribute to Vincent's guitarist, Cliff Gallup. Beck sounds terrific as he reconstructs Gallup's parts, but he doesn't add anything to the originals. Still, Crazy Legs is a fun listen and offers many insights into Beck's playing, if not Gallup's.

But all I can tell you is I've seen grown men, after 'Nessun Dorma' and 'Corpus Christi' with the orchestra, just lose it. You could tell in their eyes, they were gone. It seems to work from an emotional level. I'm quite pleased with the way it's going."

He adds that, "The emotion of playing, say, 'Elegy For Dunkirk' (from the film 'Atonement') is in some ways more intense and more gut-wrenching than playing the blues, 'cause those composers knew how to get you. The simplicity and just poring yourself into those phrasings is not dissimilar from blues at all. I'm sure people like Mahler and Holst and all the people that wrote such amazing music would agree with that. They want to get you to react."

Beck is previewing some of the "Emotion & Commotion" material, with his band and 30-piece orchestras, during his run of shows with Eric Clapton that started last week at London's O2 Arena and continues this week (Feb. 18-19) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with shows also slated for Toronto (Feb. 21) and Montreal (Feb. 22). He's also gearing up for his own world tour (sans orchestra), which begins March 25 in Adelaide, Australia, and also hits Japan before arriving in North America on April 16. Beck will perform on May 1 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and June 26 at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival near Chicago, and on June 8-9 he'll join May and her band for a tribute to Les Paul at the Iridium Jazz Club, the late guitarist innovator's old haunt in New York.

Beck, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2009 and won a Grammy Award last month for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, is also producing a rockabilly album for May's husband, guitarist Darrel Higham. Billboard

Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop is a 1989 album by guitarist Jeff Beck, recorded at Sol Studios. It prominently features Tony Hymas on keyboards and Terry Bozzio on drums. This album shows Beck largely trading in his jazz fusion sound for an instrumental album rock feel. It reached the 49th position on the Billboard 200 and won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The final song on the album "Sling Shot" was featured in the movie Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Terry Bozzio, as credited as the “voice” on the CD, does vocal performances on two tracks. In "Guitar Shop", using a salesy “adman” voice, he plays with words and phrases that could be heard in a guitar shop, including “preamp pro-sound performance” and “It’ll phase. It’ll flange. It’ll fuzz. It’s fast. It’s flexible. Just feel those frets.”

In "A Day in the House", he delivers a speech, as if to the House of Lords, where he says, “My lords, I call to order. On the issue of the environment, nothing is being done. My lords, we can’t keep dancing along pretending everything is just fine. The consequences are devastating. We must strike out and rescue this fine earth upon which we live… much is being said, my lords, but nothing is being done.” The refrain, “nothing is being done” is repeated as a counterpoint to the guitar riffs throughout the rest of the song. As a prelude to a solo, he says, “I suggest that the issue be passed to Mr. Beck.”
