E. Rodney Jones KXLW, St. Louis
I've been in radio for some 12 years now, and have even been known to do some trumpet piaying on occasion, and I've been lucky enough to hear in person and on records most of the jazzmen who have come up in that time.
But never was I so impressed as the first time I heard Sam Lazar. His remarkable technique, his execution of" ideas, and the "soul" he projects make him, 1 think, the best organist now playing jazz.
That's a large statement. I know, because, there are some pretty tough players out there, but give a listen and 1 bet you'll agree that Sam is his own unique self and already a major talent.
Sam, 27, is a self-taught musician. He's from St. Louis and has up to this point centered all his activities in that city. He played piano for several years, getting his start with the combo that Ernie Wilkins led in St. Louis before Ernie went on to join Count Basie and become so well-known for his writing that he's now one of the top freelance arrangers in New York.
Sam moved on from Ernie's group to George Hudson's band, which has been known for years around St. Louis as the swingingest big band in the area and which has been the spawning ground for several well-known jazzmen, including Clark Terry, Jimmy Forrest, and others.
A tour with Tab Smith's combo followed, then a hitch in the army from 1951 to '53. When he got out of service he abandoned music altogether and went to school to study medical technology. But then one day in 1958, Sam went to a St. Louis club called the Peacock Alley to heat jimmy Smith and his trio. "Right then and there I decided to play organ," he says, and so it has only been some 2'/2 years that be has been piaying the instrument.
You'd never believe it to hear him. He became successful almost immediately, and his trio has enjoyed great popularity in his home town.
Another guy you're going to be hearing a lot from in days to come is the guitarist on this album, Giant Green. He's got musicians ail over the country raving about "that guitar player in St. Louis," and undoubtedly will perk up many more ears when they hear him here
So this is Space Flight, a record debut for a guy 1 happen to think is the greatest organist now playing. Listen to him. You may agree with me.
